Dr. Joan’s Approach to Soft Tissue Health
Dr. Joan’s treatment approach puts your individual needs at the heart of your therapy. She uses specific, targeted, safe, and profoundly effective hands-on soft tissue medical massage therapy to move you along the healing process, alleviate pain, and provide improved range of motion. It's more than just a treatment; it's a personalized experience crafted around you, your lifestyle needs, and your well-being.
Dr. Joan’s main aim is to bring balance back into your musculoskeletal system. A healthy body is like a finely tuned orchestra, each part playing its role to create a harmonious symphony of movement. When one element is out of sync, it affects the whole. You will work closely with Dr. Joan, and as a team, we will rebalance your body, restoring harmony of movement and function.
As your body rebalances, you will experience an improvement in mental, emotional, and physical function. You will be able to painlessly resume activities that you have been avoiding. Life, work, and recreational activities that may have been a struggle will start to feel easier, more natural. The stress you feel will start to dissipate. Whether it's reaching for a book on a high shelf or bending to tie your shoelaces, each motion will be a testament to your improving coordination and ease of movement.
Best of all, your therapy restores the long-term health of your muscles and fascia — the complex network of structural, soft tissues that supports and envelops your muscles and organs.By enhancing their health, your body will begin to feel and move and perform like your younger self could.
Chronic pain will no longer be a frequent, unwanted companion in your life. With each medical massage therapy session, you will progress and see your health goals becoming reality. In every session, Dr. Joan works to alleviate pain, aiming for its total disappearance or significant reduction. Are you ready to take steps toward achieving a life where pain doesn't limit your options—a life where you can chart your own course? The first step is to schedule the free 15-minute discovery phone call with Dr. Joan for therapeutic massage therapy.
Early in her life, Dr. Joan was a professional dancer/choreographer. A serious and very painful injury to her right hip abruptly ended her career. She was told by good, caring physicians that she would not recover well enough to re-enter the professional dance field. But Dr. Joan proved the doctors wrong. Divine guidance took her to a medical doctor who practiced soft tissue and neural therapy. Joan’s full recovery was the start of her life’s work. When she retired from professional dance, she began her career as a therapist in manual medicine.
Dr. Joan’s hands-on soft tissue therapeutic massage therapy does more than just treat symptoms; it targets and corrects the root causes of musculoskeletal imbalance. The result is a body that functions better. It's not only about living without pain; it's about living more fully, with comfort, flexibility, enhanced physical ability. It’s about your right to experience quality of life. So let's start this journey together and rediscover the joy of unrestricted, pain-free movement.

What To Expect
We agree to take a closer look at the (often) complex factors causing your pain, including correcting musculoskeletal mechanics. We will quickly discover poor postural habits that lead to mechanical distress and explore easy ways to reduce the impact of stress and emotional distress. We might even take steps together to improve your relationship with your body. Many people are surprised to find-out that a positive relationship to oneself is the key for igniting your body’s wisdom and ability to self-correct and thrive.
Yes, physical evaluation is very important to discover physical causes of your pain/dysfunction. But to begin the healing process in your body, we must engage with you as a living whole person.
What is your relationship to your body? How do you treat yourself? Do you care for your body or just make demand upon demand on it? Do you truly live with your body as a trusted friend, or do you treat it like a machine? Do you have a spiritual or philosophical understanding of what it means to BE an embodied being? Does it sound strange to you if Dr. Joan, our medical massage therapist, suggests that your living body is the very out-picturing of your Soul?
Dr. Joan’s therapeutic massage treatment approach is centered around you and your journey towards a healthier, pain-free life. It’s about empowering you with the tools and knowledge to keep your body in balance and in motion, always.
Some people run all over town, trying every physical therapy available, only to remain in pain. These are often people who are not yet ready to look within, with an open mind, to discover ways in which personal lifestyle may be out of alignment with life purpose.
Dr. Joan offers all her manual therapies within the circle of a beautiful wellness wheel that includes seven dimensions of experience: physical, emotional, intellectual, social, environmental, financial, and spiritual. Make no mistake about it. Body pain can show-up whenever we get out of alignment with life purpose and inner vision. If we let the body speak to us, and if we listen, the body will tell us where we are stuck, and thus throw light on how we can become unstuck and move forward in freedom.
Chronic body pain can be very physical and related to problems with exercise, posture, breathing, sleep habits, and structural imbalances. Physical pain is often easy to heal when the right therapy is given to the body’s fascia network. But if something like a divorce or negative work environment is contributing to your physical pain, we can work together to help you find solutions. It won’t surprise you to hear that when your body functions more optimally with little pain, it helps you deal more competently and positively with life’s challenges.
If you're longing for relief from persistent pain and yearning for improved mobility, you'll welcome having a course of treatment that meets you right where you are on each successive treatment. As you improve, what we do together in the clinic changes.
So how many medical massage therapy treatments will you need to start feeling better and how does the healing process work?
Most people see significant improvement in just 1-3 treatments.
Persons with complex histories of multiple injuries or surgeries may require 6-15 sessions of progressive therapy to alleviate pain.
People who are able and willing to make improvements in lifestyle and care of the body will improve the fastest and maintain the good results the longest.
It is a great joy to Dr. Joan, our therapeutic massage therapist, that she has helped many people regain a balanced body with pain-free living and working. She has helped firemen, competitive athletes, lawyers, laborers, dental hygienists, aircraft pilots, surgical nurses, and people from other demanding occupations to be able to work without pain. Will it surprise you to learn that it often can be more difficult to help a person with a sedentary lifestyle than with a demanding physical job? If you have a sedentary lifestyle, you must be willing to discover how to bring easy movement into your daily routines. Dr. Joan will teach you easy to do effective therapeutic exercises that you actually can do in bed!
The fascia tissue of the body is truly a magical tissue. It can be restored at any age when the right therapies are applied--and this is the tissue that Dr. Joan works with during your medical massage therapy treatment! In the last 10 years, some amazing scientific advances have been made in revealing the many roles of soft tissues in maintaining life, health, and physical ability. Over several decades, Dr. Joan has studied with advanced teachers from manual massage therapy schools that understand the special properties of the fascia. These include the teachings of Laban-Bartenieff Movement Analysis, the CranioSacral teachings of Dr. John Upledger, DO, and the Visceral Therapy teachings of Jean-Pierre Barral, DO.
Why Does This Treatment Work?
Imagine the key to increased flexibility, enhanced body function, and improved vitality – it's a special tissue known as fascia. As the most plentiful tissue in your body, fascia serves as an essential support system, encompassing and sustaining every organ and structure within you.
Composed primarily of water and three straightforward proteins, fascia holds a unique potential for restoration. Through our gentle, hands-on therapeutic massage therapy techniques, we can breathe new life into your fascia, enabling it to function optimally.
When we revitalize your fascia, it's like unlocking a new lease on life. Movement becomes effortless, akin to the fluidity experienced in your younger years. It's not just about moving; it's about moving with ease, comfort, and joy.
Moreover, healthy fascia promotes improved circulation of blood, lymph, and other body fluids. Your body's structure starts to feel more resilient and softer, and the all-too-familiar stiffness begins to fade away.
Aging and a lack of stretching can cause our bodies to slow down and stiffen up. But through our targeted medical massage therapy, we can help your soft tissues regain a more youthful state. Imagine a rejuvenated you - moving freely, feeling better, and living fully.
To begin your journey towards pain-free living, call to schedule a free 15-minute discovery phone call, and Dr. Joan will interview you to gain a picture of the various traumas and demands that your body has lived through. At that point, we can decide together whether you are looking for the therapeutic massage therapies offered by Dr. Joan.
And if it sounds like we're a good match, you can easily schedule your first in-office appointment during the same call. This is your journey, and we're here to walk alongside you every step of the way.
We look at the whole person to determine the root causes of your chronic joint and muscle pain.
Within a relatively short time, most people regain their fluidity, flexibility, and mobility naturally.
It's about empowering you with the tools and knowledge to keep your body in balance and motion, always.
